Porter Hay Farms is a 3rd Generation Hay Farm that continues to grow quality hay of multiple varieties. Porter Hay Farm was first established in 1961 by Jimmy Porter in McElmo Canyon, Colorado. Living in a rural area, with the closest store being 20 miles away, surrounded by cattle ranches, Jimmy saw the growing need for hay in Montezuma County. Starting with 300 acres, Jimmy began the arduous task of growing grass, alfalfa, and oats with little experience. Later that year, Jimmy married his lifelong sweetheart, Dorothy Porter. Dorothy Porter was raised in the neighboring town of Mancos, Colorado on Tumbling T Ranch where her family ran cattle up Echo Basin. After marriage, Dorothy helped Jimmy with the farm by driving the baler, loading hay, and changing water. Shortly after marriage, Dorothy gave birth to her first of three children, James (Mike) Porter, who now continues to run the farm with his wife Schelli Porter, and their two children Allison Porter-Prieskorn and Byron Porter. With 63 years of experience and 2,100 acres of land, the Porter Family continues to show their love for agriculture by producing hay for ranches across the U.S.
At Porter Hay Farms, we're proud to be a part of the local community. We work closely with other farmers and producers to promote local agriculture and support small businesses.
